Islamabad High Court (IHC) has suspended the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) election tribunals change decision, appointing retired judges of top courts in the new election tribunals.
IHC’s Chief Justice Aamer Farooq heard the petition filed by Ali Bukhari and others challenging election tribunals change.
Court has also issued to show-cause notice to Anjum Aqeel Khan on contempt of court and ordered him to ensure his appearance in every hearing of the case.
The IHC’s verdict mentioned that upon judicial inquiry Anjum Aqeel Khan couldn’t clarify the use of words in his application.
ECP, country’s top electoral body got powers to appoint retired judges for hearing the complaints.
ECP going to set up new tribunals comprising retired high court judges, as the latest ordinance issued to amend the Election Act 2017 has restored its Section 140 in the original shape.
ECP can appoint retired judges to the election tribunals without consulting the high court chief justices.
